Surveys the major prehistoric and protohistoric cultures and societies of that area of Mexico and Central America identified with the evolution of Meso-American civilization. Major topics include early human colonization of the Americas, the domestication of plants and animals, the emergence of regionally-based cultures and societies, trade and exchange and the evolution of urbanism and the state. Primary emphasis on such ancient cultures and societies as those of the Olmec, Zapotec, Maya, Teotihuacan, Toltec and Aztec. Prereq: Introduction to archaeology. Cross-listed with ANTH 5320.
