A changing set of topics that address the nature of language in society and analysis of “Languaculture.” Topics may include: language and power, language and identity, conversational analysis, language and self, language socialization, nonverbal communication, evolution of language, ethnopoetics, language as social action, orality and literacy, linguistic hygiene, language and gender, discourse analysis, deception and truth. Prereq: ANTH 2102 or equivalent. Cross-listed with ANTH 5160.
