LIT 375 - Studies in British Literature

Institution:
Southern New Hampshire University
Subject:
Literature
Description:
This course examines novels, short stories, poetry, drama, and essays produced by British writers, spanning at least two literary periods or historical eras (Renaissance, Romantic, Postmodern, etc.) or focusing on one theme (violence, race, war, business, law, love and marriage, identity). The topic of the course will vary, depending on the instructor. Readings, lectures, and films on cultural and historical contexts may supplement the literary material. This semester we will explore Arthurian Romance by looking critically at this English legend and the body of literature and cultural values associated with it. We will look at the beginnings of the Arthurian stories and trace their development through the medieval period and into the Renaissance, then move to the romantic revival of chivalric romance and finish with modern versions and responses.
