Historic New Harmony¿s unique history is on display. This community, the site of two experiences in communal living, is a tribute to the following two societies as well as a vibrant and living community today. New Harmony, Indiana was founded in 1814 by the Harmony Society, a communal group originally from Germany with their first destination in Harmony, Pennsylvania. Ten years later the communal group settled on 20,000 acres in Indiana Territory on the banks of the Wabash River. After the Harmony society left the site, Robert Owen and William Maclure created a ¿New Moral World¿ based on culture and education. This course will provide an insight into Early community L8iving (ECL); what the Harmonists found when they came to Indiana Territory; how they carved a life from the wilderness; and also discuss the forward thinking ideas of the Owen/Maclure Community. This unique step back into time will include four demonstrations: open hearth cooking, rope making, candle dipping and butter churning.
