This course is an introduction to Japanese cultural and aesthetic traditions as represented in premodern literature, drama, architecture, landscapes, tea practices, and the visual arts. Materials include Japanese aesthetic, literary and dramatic writings in translation; modern scholarly treatments; and selected visual works. The course is designed for students who have no previous exposure to Japanese studies at the college level.
