EAST 1271 - Screening Modern China: Chinese Film and History

Institution:
Brown University
Subject:
Description:
From the shadowplay in teahouses in 1896 to the transnational glamour in the global cultural industry, history of Chinese cinema bridges the two fin-de-siecles of the 20th and 21st centuries. The course of screening China interlinks the crisis points of history in relation to a number of topics such as revolution, nationhood, colonialism, and Chinese diaspora. The survey inspects how the representational technology of cinema is indigenized in building the national cinema of China as art of social engagement. Not open to first year students.
