This survey of 20th century Chinese literature progresses along a chronological ordering of Chinese literature across the late Qing and early Republican, the May Fourth, the Leftist 1930s, the Sino-Japanese war, the Cultural Revolution, and the "Greater China" era of contemporary mainland, Taiwan, and Hong Kong since the 1980s. It maintains historically sensitized on the one hand, and on the other capitalizes the fictional space of self, gender, society and nation that exceeds politics and ideology. Readings are in English; no knowledge of Chinese required.
