This course will focus on the medications, health and beauty aids and medical supplies that have been approved for sale without a prescription by the Food and Drug Administration. The mechanism of action of the active ingredients as well as the instructions for use will be presented. Products will be grouped by indication for use and will include but will not be limited to cough/cold preparations, pain relievers, first-aid products, anti-smoking products, vitamin and nutritional supplements, herbal and homeopathic products, dermatology products, anti-acid products, feminine products etc. This course will also discuss medical supplies and their use including devices for the administration of drugs (parenteral supplies, pumps, transdermal systems. etc.), walking aids, wheel chairs, colostomy supplies, hearing aids, diabetic supplies, diagnostic machines, diagnostic kits etc. Visual aids and demonstrations of the products presented in the course will augment classroom instruction. The student will be evaluated on factual knowledge and where appropriate manual technical skills.
