Description:

An internship is an accredited, experiential education course wherein students explore and immerse in their intended field of study by engaging in a volunteer, shadow or work experience with a professional host site. First and second year students intending to major or minor in the Marine Sciences disciplines are encouraged to apply theory and methods in the practical environment of a professional host site, such as a public or private research facility, government agency, organization, company, or corporation, for a semester or summer of part- or full-time active, immersed learning. Students propose, and obtain approval for the internship course through the Internship Director, and are assisted in researching, finding, and applying for local, regional, national or international internship positions. Students agree to follow a curriculum guideline as outlined in the Marine Sciences Dept Internship Packet. Grades are determined by the Internship Director and include: completion of 40 hours at the internship site per credit hour, satisfactory completion of academic assignments, an on-site performance evaluation and, regular meetings with the Internship Director. Students are encouraged to explore various career fields by taking successive internship courses throughout their undergraduate academic career.
