An introduction to chemistry phenomena and principles with an emphasis on developing both an understanding of chemistry and an appreciation of what chemists do. Students will investigate the fundamentals of chemistry in the context of real-world problems and will utilize systems of biological and environmental importance. Core concepts to be explored include atomic structure, structure and bonding, classes of organic compounds, and spectroscopy. Three hours lecture, one hour recitation, three hours laboratory.
