Description:
The first term of this course will examine the international legal regime applicable to international non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Topics will include the basic private international law mechanisms which enable NGOs to act outside of their jurisdiction or origin, the consultative status they enjoy with the UN and other international organizations, and their standing with international courts and tribunals (or lack thereof). In the second term of the course, the regulatory apparatus applying to NGOs- both purely domestic and international- in the United States will be examined. Included will be discussions of the process of achieving recognition of tax exempt status, and establishing eligibility to special tax benefits such as deductible charitable contributions, local property tax exemptions, and the like.
