This course will examine the nature and history of international law; sources of international law; the place of international law in the domestic law of the United States; statehood; recognition of States and governments; State territory; jurisdiction; sovereign immunity and diplomatic and consular immunity; State responsibility, diplomatic protection and the treatment of aliens; human rights; the law of the sea; treaties; the judicial settlement of international disputes(with particular reference to the International Court of Justice); the United Nations and the maintenance of international peace; and the use of force by States.
