The course will first introduce students to some of the distinctive aspects of United States law and legal institutions, including the U.S. legal profession, legal education, admission to the Bar and regulation of lawyers. The U.S. Constitution will be introduced through the discussion of several U.S. Supreme Court cases that address issues being hotly debated in the United States today. Other unique features of the American legal system will be discussed. Common law methods of statutory interpretation will also be covered and a sequence of products liability cases will be worked through to acquaint students with techniques of case analysis as a way of understanding how the common law changes and develops over time.
