Examination of changing definitions over time, and appraisal of the role that conflicts over "freedom" play in defining American identity and politics in the present. Course readings (mostly primary sources) introduce students to central disputes over meanings of "freedom" in American history, and student papers will also investigate conflicts or ideas about liberty.
