The history of women's exclusion and inclusion into armed forces in relation to popular and competing notions of citizenship, national identity, and military service in twentieth century UK, US, Russia, Germany. The female combatant as subject of public debate, private fantasy, state regulations, and military experimentation. Close examination of male and female near-trench and trench-level experiences of combat in the two World Wars. Course materials include firsthand accounts such as memoirs and autobiographical novels and sketches, political treatises, popular literary works, academic articles, excerpts from popular U.S., European, and Russian films.
