This course offers students an introduction to the history of the 19th- and 20th-century Muslim world, using the lens of the development of different forms of nationalism. We will investigate both the intellectual roots and expressions of various nationalisms, as well as the social and political factors behind popular mobilization. The class will be focused on several case studies, including Egypt, Algeria, India-Pakistan, Iran, Sudan, and Nigeria. Students work will be focused on weekly readings, and on a semester-long research project. Instructor: Hall
