Examines epidemiology and social context of mental disorders globally. Topics include basic epidemiology of most common mental disorders; challenges with definition & classification of mental disorders; epidemiological methods; mental disorders in the context of HIV/AIDS; disaster/emergency mental health; special populations; approaches to treatment; & barriers to treatment such as stigma. Course utilizes a social epidemiology perspective; focuses on social, economic, & cultural determinants & consequences of mental health problems across the lifecourse.
