The literature and film of crime and detection in the American, British, and German context. An examination of our fascination with stories about violence and death, as well as the connections between modern social history and narrative form. Includes interpretations of central works in crime fiction history: stories by Poe and Schiller, detective novels by Agatha Christie and Raymond Chandler, the thrillers of Fritz Lang, and postmodern tales by Eco, Auster, and Süskind.
