Introduction to the history of an intellectual movement from Ferdinand de Saussure to Roland Barthes, Claud Levi-Strauss, Jacques Lacan, and Michel Foucault. An emphasis is given to questions of method and issues concerning the individuation of cultures and individualities. Additional readings include chapters from Georges Canguilhem, Vincent Descombes, Jean Hyppolite, Alexandre Kojeve, and Maurice Merlau-Ponty. Particular attention will be given to ¿non-Western¿ societies. Instructor: Mudimbe. 3 units
