Historical evolution of cities from an economic perspective, considering the factors driving urban growth and decline at different points in history and the evolving organization of economic activity and social living within cities. Additional topics include dynamics of suburbanization and inner city decline, racial and ethnic segregation; urban industrial structure and spatial distribution of jobs; and impact of metropolitan political structure on urban sprawl and provision of public goods.
