This class will examine the theology of hope and the Church's rhetoric of consolation expressed in treatises and funeral orations in early Christianity. The course is designed to function as a PTM Limited Elective that challenges students to consider how the Church articulates a message of consolation to those who are grieving that is grounded in a distinctive Christian anthropology and Christology. In practical terms, how does Jesus' passion and resurrection make any difference in the way of ministering to people who are in the midst of suffering or have lost a loved one. Instructor: Smith
