Introduction to constitutive modeling of multiphase mixtures with application to biological tissues (for example, skin, cornea, ligament, cartilage, intervertebral disc). Fundamental conservation laws and thermodynamic principles of the theory of mixtures will be reviewed. Development of constitutive equations for mixtures containing inviscid and viscous fluids, as well as hyperelastic, viscoelastic, and charged solids. Emphasis on solution methods required to determine the stress, strain, and flow fields in boundary value problems of simplified geometries, including problems for contact of two bodies. A knowledge of tensor fields, indicial notation, and partial differential equations is required. Prerequisite: Mathematics 114 or equivalent, and Biomedical Engineering 229 or consent of instructor.
