Films, documentaries, television series, and soap operas produced in mainland China in the post-Mao era. Topics include the history and aesthetics of the cinema, soap operas as the new forum for public debates on popular culture, the emerging film criticism in China, the relationship of politics and form in postrevolutionary aesthetics. (Same as Chinese 188S but requires extra assignments.) Research paper required. Prerequisite: Chinese 184S or advanced oral and written proficiency in Mandarin Chinese. Instructor: Staff
