Survey of works in Chinese from Confucius to the Qing Dynasty including short stories, novels, autobiographical writings, and poetry. Topics include the role of the educated elite in relation to literature and culture and how the literati portray themselves in their works. Relations between orthodoxy and marginalization of the literati and its impact on their writing.(Same as Asian and African Languages and Literature 180S but requires extra assignments.)
