This course is designed to allow the reading specialist cadidate to focus on an in-depth look at secondary literacy teaching and learning practices. Candidates will examine literacy strategies that demonstrate how the adolescent student can be taught to successfully read a broad range of challenging and difficult text with deeper levels of comprehension and how to write effectively. Topics will include: learning strategies that build the effective adolescent reader and writer, exploring the demanding world of literacy facing the adolescent student, motivating the adolescent for learning, and understanding how to allow choice within a regorous curriculum. Assessment that mirrors instruction is embedded with the topics. Course addresses state standards 1,2 ,5 ,6 ,7 ,8 ,9 ,10. (A field experience is required in order to pass this course, see syllabus for specific details.)
