Focuses on the integration of developmentally appropirate reading and writing instruction for children kindergarten through 3rd grade. Importance is placed on reserch-based teaching practices in areas such as phonemic awareness, phonics instruction, fluency, vocabulary, text comprehension, and study skills practices alongh with the processes of assessing, diagnosing, and utilizing data collected to guide explicit and systematic reading and writing instruction. Emphasis is placed on learning experiences that enable children (including children whose native language is other than English) to become capable, independent readers. Course includes field experience during reading and writing instruction in grades K-3 (4 hours per grade level). Prerequisites: EDU 2250, EDU 2556, EDU 2600, and admission to the Teacher Education Program.
