This course looks at the ways in which language is used in educational and community settings, as well as the processes by which people acquire and learn multiple literacies, both in and out of school. It explores sociocultural theories that situate languages and literacies within their historical, cultural, and instructional contexts. Students will learn to conduct ethnographic research on themes such as these, using the techniques of participant observation, interviewing, and document analysis.
