[Offered on sufficient demand] Fall 2010 Characteristics of Students with Learning and Behavioral Problems: The primary focus of this teacher-preparation special topics course is to provide characteristics of special education students with mild disabilities who are often served in general education classrooms. Also addressed are the role of the classroom teacher in the special education process, classroom management, and modifications/accommodations for students with mild disabilities. Spring 2011 Introduction to Special Education: This course provides information about the various types, characteristics, and etiologies of exceptionalities; identifies state and federal laws related to special education; and serves as an introduction to the education of exceptional students. Prerequisite: EDUC 1330. Literacy Assessment and Methods: Students will learn how to administer, assess, and interpret results from both formal and informal literacy tests. Instructional decisions will be made in the areas of emergent literacy, phonological and phonemic awareness, oral language, vocabulary, word recognition, phonics, text readability, comprehension, fluency, spelling, writing, study strategies, interests and attitudes. Applied instructional decisions will be assessed to determine response to instruction. Students will participate in an internship at a local school where they will assess, teach, and evaluate results. Prerequisites: READ 2341 and admission into the Teacher Education program.
