This course provides a Level 1 Avalanche Certificate through the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE). The course describes a framework for decision making and risk management in avalanche terrain. Through both classroom and field instruction, students will be provided with lessons and exercises that are practically oriented, useful, and applicable in the understanding of the various types and characteristics of avalanches, the planning and preparation needed to travel in avalanche terrain, the bonding tests used to determine snow stability and the rescue techniques used in case of an avalanche accident. NOTE: The materials fee provides students with a certificate and a student manual.
