Prof. Avelar. Pre-requisite: 400-level sequence. This course surveys the avant-garde movements in Spanish America and Brazil, focusing on the period from 1916 to 1935. Some of the movements to be examined include Huidobro’s creacionismo, ultraismo, Brazilian modernismo and verdeamarelismo, Mexican estridentismo and the “Contemporáneos†group and the impact in Latin America of surrealism and other European avant-garde movements. Readings in both Spanish and Portuguese, and the class is taught in both languages, but fluency in both languages is not expected. (Same as PORT 619.)
