An advanced survey of Brazilian social and cultural critics of the twentieth century including Silvio Romero, Euclides da Cunha, Gilberto Freyre, Sérgio Buarque de Hollanda, Guerrero Ramos, Roland Corbisier, Florestan Fernandes, Antônio Candido, Roberto Schwarz, Ferreira Gullar, Silviano Santiago, Luiz Costa Lima, Flora Süssekind, Renato Ortiz, Muniz Sodré, and Marilena Chauí. The course foregrounds historic and contemporary debates in Brazil surrounding nationality, modernity, democracy, and citizenship.
