(Prerequisite, CH574; taken concurrently with CH661.) The first half of a year-long biochemistry sequence that provides an in-depth look at the chemistry that occurs in living organisms. The course content will focus on the structure-function relationships as they pertain to the major classes of biomolecules. Central to this theme will be a detailed examination of protein function, enzyme kinetics, catalytic mechanisms, and modes of regulation. The basic structure and function of nucleic acids, lipids, and carbohydrates will also be examined. Concurrent enrollment in the lab is required. Students should only enroll in this course if they also plan to enroll in CH662, Biochemistry II. Credit cannot be earned for both this course and CH560.
