Prof. Hill. Popularly considered as the very image of the American Indian, 19th-century Great Plains cultures were a recent and, tragically, short-lived florescence, made possible largely by the introduction of the horse. Horses encouraged the development of a new lifestyle and attracted immigrant peoples from every direction. The course will examine traditional cultures, the change to a nomadic equestrian existence, and the ways in which diverse immigration groups quickly developed very similar ways of life.
