This graduate level online course is for social studies teachers and features specific strategies designed to increase student literacy development and achievement in social studies through the use of primary and secondary historical sources. This course was designed by a reading specialist in conjunction with the "We the People", District II Educational Coordinator to ensure that "best practices" in both literacy and social studies are presented. Candidates will learn how functional grammar can be used to supplement traditional reading strategies that help students comprehend both primary and secondary historical sources and meet the state social studies standards. Candidates will incorporate these new skills to develop literacy-rich, standards-based curriculum for their own students.
