Description:

This course is designed to introduce students to ethical philosophy through the study of moral problems. The class begins with a brief introduction to major ethical theories. We will spend the remainder of the semester applying these theories to various ethical problems such as those posed by poverty, sexuality, affirmative action, gun control, punishment and the death penalty, homosexuality, and animal rights. Students will learn to identify kinds of ethical reasons in scholarly, legal, and popular arguments, describe the structure of these arguments, compare these arguments, and evaluate these arguments.
