Prerequisite: MUS 212. A survey of musical analytical techniques from the theories of Rameau, Reimann, Tovey, and more recent traditionalists such as McHose, Piston, Ottman, and others. Modern techniques based on Schenker, Forte, Reti, and others will be studied, with emphasis on functional, aesthetic, and historical judgement. Alternate years in spring.
