WSGS 561 - The Gendering of Music

Institution:
Duquesne University
Subject:
WSGS - Women & Gender Studies
Description:
This course critically examines and explores recent issues of gender ideology as it affects men and women’s musical activities. Drawing on non-Western music, Western art music and popular culture, it will analyze and examine music as well as the social context in which men and women make and perform music. The course will also take into consideration the musical representation of gender difference and sexuality, and a range of related issues pertaining to musical aesthetics, sociology, creativity, and historiography. It will further explore how gender and music interplay in relation to other issues such as culture, race, religion, and power. Since there will be no exclusive focus on a particular culture or tradition, the general seminar approach will be topical (rather than chronological). Readings will include works from notable authorities in each topical area including Judith Butler, Susan McClary, Pirkko Moisala and Beverley Diamond, Ellen Koskoff, Hildegard von Bingen, Eileen Hayes, Ruth Solie. Students will review articles, lead class discussions and write a critically informed paper due at the end of the term.
