This course engages with a study of formal design in music and the phenomenon of style in various historical periods. Work will focus upon recognition of the constituent elements of a composition as well as how each of these elements contributes to the whole. Special attention will be given to the relevance between formal analysis and the art of interpretation in the musical performance.
