An introduction to basic instrumental and choral conducting techniques with emphasis on proper conducting posture, the preparatory gesture, the release, basic beat patterns and styles, use of the baton, and development of the left hand. Course will also include instruction in score reading, analysis, and preparation, with emphasis on the standard literature. Class time will be divided equally between lecture-demonstrations and practical conducting experience in a laboratory setting.
