This course surveys the American economy from its roots in the competing visions for the new nation offered by Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson, through the stimulus the Civil War gave to industrialization, and on to the United States attaining the status of the world's most prosperous nation in the wake of World Wars I and II. The course covers the cycling of good and bad times in a capitalist economy; the challenges of wealth, poverty, and economic inequality throughout American history; the complex and often conflicted relationship of government and business; the struggles of American workers for economic security; and the transforming accomplishments of inventors and business innovators from Andrew Carnegie and George Westinghouse to Bill Gates.
