This course is designed to train students seeking careers in biotechnology R&D including:group leader, laboratory manager or project manager. The subject material will cover the mechanics of project management, team management and budgeting. Fundamentals of team formation, structure and direction will be examined along with the issues of communication and motivation within the biotech industry. Students completing the course will be expected to: Define a project and develop project tasks. Be familiar with tools used in R&D management. Understand the importence of teams and external resources in projects including the effective management of meetings. Develop a project budget and understand financial concepts such as return on investment. Understand the principles of both protection and use of intellectual property and documentation including in-licensing Be familiar with the details of regulatory compliance as it relates to laboratory development including FDS, OSHA, EPA, DOT etc. Be familiar with product transfer and manufacturing documentation. Understand the principles of quality assurance and quality control as it applies to product development and laboratory management Be able to effectively communicate project goals, status, and issues to both technical and non- technical personnel.
