In 1987, Dana Gioia wrote a provocative essay titled "Can Poetry Matter?" Although responses have varied since the original publication date, the answer is, for this course, yes, poetry does matter and always has. From childhood verses to political statements, American poetry has played an important part in society. This class will present a brief overview of the influences of American poetry.
