This course will trace the history of gothic literature starting with Horace Walpole's 1764 novel, The Castle of Otranto through today's horror literature, including works by Anne Rice and Stephen King. Significant attention will be focused on the influence of the gothic novel in literature of the Romantic Age, Victorian Age, and Modern periods of literature. Besides literature, this course will also explore the gothic influences on architecture, art, film, and popular culture. Prerequisite: ENG 1530. Campus and term: J occasionally
