The objective of this course is to provide current and timely information on a variety of grief, loss, and death related topics. Such topics may include but will not be limited to: cultural variables in the death process; survivors; the grief process; cultural grief; helping children cope with death; childhood bereavement; death with dignity; the funeral; spiritual aspects of death and dying; HIV/AIDS; psychological theories regarding grief, loss, and chronic sorrow; death ritual and custom; near death experience; suicide; and other topics of interest to students. Bereavement counseling will be addressed, but will not be the focus of this course. Prerequisites: PSY 101; senior status or with instructor permission.
