Institution:
Dutchess Community College
Subject:
Self Development

We read and discuss poetry that addresses personal loss. Students have the option to keep private journals containing reactions to the reading and responses to questions raised by class discussion. Sharing journals is not required. Diverse group of poets includes Reinaldo Arenas, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Rita Dove and Edna St. Vincent Millay. Writing exercises include responses to poems, reflections on the class discussion, and optional additional writing on the subject of personal loss. The course is structured to reflect the 5 stages of grief as proposed by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross (1969). Each week focuses on one stage of grief, pairing it with a poem or poems that explore that particular stage.
