Principles of chemistry, including stoichiometry; periodicity; atomic-molecular structure and bonding; gases, liquids and solids; solutions; thermochemistry; kinetics; equilibrium; descriptive chemistry; introduction to organic chemistry. Three hours of lecture and one hour discussion per week. Prerequisite for CHM 141: Passing score on the American Chemical Society Placement Test or concurrent enrollment in CHM 140. Prerequisite for CHM 142: CHM 141 or permission of instructor.
