THE 208 - Mid East Dance Thru History

Institution:
Elmhurst University
Subject:
Theatre
Description:
A multi-faceted exploration of Middle/Near Eastern Dance (RAKS SHARQI), the course studies this dance's development throughout history to its current status. The political, sociological, ethnomusicology, theological, historical (and more) environments which have shaped, developed, hindered, grown and evolved this dance form are studied. The origin of the misnomer "belly dance" will be addressed. Special focus will be on the impact of religion & politics on this performance art. Raqs Sharqi's popularity in the West is currently in a 'growth' mode; technology has further added to trasmission of information and options for study. The course's text and reading materials, visual and audio study, plus the actual performance of Raqs Sharqi, provide students with a fascinating and intensive learning experience. Students learn in both classroom and studio settings. The studio study focuses on learning movement, music, rhythms and choreography. The course culminates in the presentation of an exciting recital concert, sharing what the class has learned. No Prerequisites.
