Walt Whitman declared the "the real war will never get into books." Nonetheless, generations of novelists, poets, and memoirists have tried to capture something of the reality of the Civil War in their pages.This course examines a range of literary and cinematic works that make the attempt, including such novels as The Killer Angels; Sam Watkins's memoir "Co. Aytch."; short stories by Ambrose Bierce, Stephen Crane, and Louisa May Alcott; poetry by Herman Melville and Walt Whitman; and popular songs and speeches. Representative films include Gone with the Wind, Glory, and Gettysburg.
