Elmhurst University
Subject:
English Courses
Description:
This course will focus on memoir and/or non-fiction through the process of: writing personal narratives, workshopping those essays, mini fieldtrips (local), and viewing/discussing memoirs that have been made into films. The class will begin by reading a variety of styles of contemporary memoirs to expose students to examples of the genre. The readings will lead into the writing portion of the course which will be divided into three personal narrative essays: writing about a music experience (a favorite concert, album, etc), food writing, and finally, an essay on a topic of the student's choice. At the end of the term each student will have a final portfolio of revised essays and a better sense of who they are by exploring the experiences they have written about.
