Description:
This course provides an introduction to factors associated with early intervention in speech-language pathology and audiology. Fetal development; prenatal, neonatal, and postnatal risk factors; syndromes associated with communication deficits; assessment of infant and toddler nonverbal communication; infant/care giver interaction and attachment; remediation; and the primary role of the speech-language pathologist on the intervention team are studied. We will observe children with speech-language disorders and children at risk for developing speech-language disorders at sites in the communities near Elmhurst. Sites may include Lifelink Head Start in Bensenville, Child's Voice in Wood Dale, Pediatric Place in Arlington Heights, Easter Seals in Lombard, and so forth. Junior status or sophomore with consent of instructor.
